Well, you probably missed the server move announcement, since it didn't manage to make the move in our backups ;) but nevermind, because the move is over now.
The great news is that the new server is significantly more powerful than the old one, and we've been able to bring the documentation back online as well ... it looks like everything is back up and working, but we may still have some issues with registration or other functions which require emailing, so please have patience, and don't hesitate to let us know if you have a problem (email Jaykul at our dot-org domain). |

A lot of people have asked if GeoShell will run on Vista ... I thought I would report that the answer is "Yes, but..." GeoShell will, in fact, run on 32bit Vista (not on 64bit Vista or XP), and it works fine using just the current installer from SourceForge, but you'll get an error message from WinShellEx when it starts up.
The old DDE Server hack doesn't work in Vista, and WinShellEx pops up an error to inform you of this every time it starts up. There are a couple of minor issues I've noticed also: the system tray shows multiple icons for Task Manager when it's running, and Vista's explorer doesn't place the shared startup notification in the registry, so if you run Explorer and then exit it, and run GeoShell ... GeoShell will re-run the startup items. Neither of these is a significant problem, but clearly that popup from WinShellEx is completely unacceptable
Obviously we need to patch up a Vista version of WinShellEx, including fixes to the system tray service, but there's something else bothering me right now: the search feature in the Windows Vista Explorer start menu is awesome, and if you give yourself a chance to get used to it before you install GeoShell, you're really not going to be willing to give it up. We've got to implement that as a plugin if we want Vista users to consider GeoShell. |

We are verry sorry to tell that our documentation wiki is gone for some technical reasons. We are aware, that this is quite a bad situation and we are trying to find a solution asap. Please be patient.
Happy new year, btw. |

This is just a short post to say: not only are we still here, but I (Jaykul) am nearly done with my course work for my Masters degree. One more week of classes, a final exam, and then ... my Thesis/Project.
However, I'm planning on spending a little time on GeoShell while I'm working on that project, because I'll finally be able to schedule my time, rather than slaving to keep up with random course deadlines. And of course, the plan is to have this all wrapped up in the next six months or so anyway (We'll see how that goes).
At any rate, I'm definitely going to be releasing a new build in the next month or so with a few features that have been rotting in source control for months (hopefully including Unicode support), and then we shall see what we shall see. I think the biggest variables from this point on is going to be how much I like Vista's version of Explorer, which will eventually determine whether I'll be focusing my energies on replacing it, or enhancing it. Check back in a month or so ;) |
